Everyone knows the classic tune “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and millions more have heard this beautiful version accompanied by a ukulele, but few people know the singer who performed it.
Israel Ka’ano’i Kamakawiwo’ole was a Hawaiian musician who performed songs to the accompaniment of Hawaiian ukulele guitars. Aside from his musical activities, this talented person also applied his energies to supporting his people’s independence.
His voice became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993. His medley of “Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and television commercial
Israel was often called “The Gentle Giant” due to the fact that, despite his imposing size, he sang in an incredibly delicate and penetrating voice. Israel was and will remain forever a legendary personality.
Sadly, Israel died at the age of 38 in 1997 due to complications with his health, attributed to his weight. But his musical legacy continues to live on.
