A Filipino Overseas Worker (OFW) Minpa Gervacio from Palawan was pick up to play the lead role in Martika, a Hong Kong film about the life of a domestic helper in a foreign land.
The film story is about a Filipino helper, Martika (Gervacio) employed by her Chinese employer, Hok Lun. Martika’s job was to take care of Hok Lun’s sick father. The old man was suffering from dementia, and Martika was left with the task of fulfilling his daily needs. The movie will show how OFWs deal with daily struggles, and still remain dedicated to their work
The director of the film Wong Fei-pang, thinks that the OFW from Palawan Gervacio fits for the role perfectly. She shared with South China Morning Post, “As I was writing the script, I realised it was still lacking something, though I couldn’t pinpoint what it was. You couldn’t really feel the emotions of the character.”
“When we met Minpa, suddenly everything was solved. She made the character a lot more layered,” director Wong added.
As for Gervacio, the opportunity has changed her life entirely. She has been working in Hong Kong for eight years already, and the role given to her reflected her own struggles as an OFW. “I told myself, I am not going to leave Hong Kong without showing you that I have succeeded. So even when I’m having a hard time, I cannot tell [my family back home],” Gervacio said.
